The Boat That Rocked (2009) [14 Nov 2009|09:38pm]

chrisjericho

Also known as "Pirate Radio" here in America. This film has that British sense of humor. I confess that I did fall asleep a tad in the middle. It was fun nonetheless.

This Is Where It Happens [14 Nov 2009|08:16pm]

saucydwellings

[art_lurker]
Alright ladies and gentleman. I'm not sure if this is saucy, but this room is just not going to ever get any better than this. And, this is the last chance to document this space, because after seven years it's finally time to move on. I start packing next week, we're moving.
This has been the space and place where I have been figuring it out, making it work, developing a style, and finally, creating a successful art business and supporting myself. The room and I have grown around and into each other over the past 7 years, everything is in constant motion. The walls are perforated with a thousand push-pins. I never replaced that horrid pink carpeting, I never took down the wallpaper border that I hate more than anything - of course now that we have tenants moving in soon, we're replacing everything. Go fig. But for today, it's still my room and I'd like to invite you in for a beer.

picture HEAVY.

Rats for adoption at the Toronto Humane Society... [14 Nov 2009|09:22am]

toronto

[littlehoudini]
Hello Toronto rat lovers...!

Right now the Toronto Humane Society is overloaded with pet rats - there are three litters (about 20-25 rats) at that perfect two month(ish) age ready to go, and a two or three more litters coming. Plus another dozen or so mature rats of various ages in singles and pairs. They're all sweet, friendly, and hand-trained. If you've ever considered adopting a pet rat (or two... or ten) this is the time to do it.

I'm looking for a REALLY GOOD chicken wing special that's on in Toronto on saturday nights. I'll be back in town next weekend and my friends and I want to get wings. That and, my friend's boyfriend can apparently consume wings in huge quantities and I want to see, haha.

So yes, ANY good chicken wing specials on Saturday nights in the city?

Postering & Flyering [13 Nov 2009|05:15pm]

Hi folks,

I'm looking for someone reliable to do some postering/flyering in the downtown core. I have 500 flyers that I would like stuck to poles etc...and no time to do it myself. I want to make sure that these don't end up in the garbage or floating down the street...

Any recommendations out there?

Thanks!

renting in TO, help? [13 Nov 2009|04:19pm]

toronto

[nicosian]
How does one rent a place in this city without good credit? I have a friend who's moving here from Montreal, has a job lined up, has money for first and last month, isn't a deadbeat, pays rent on time, and every place he's going is telling him NO, because he has less than stellar credit.

Does he need to answer this? what's the criteria? My husband and I just moved here so I'm really not all that familiar with the technicalities of renting, because we didn't have the same issue.

He's looking in Cabbagetown/Church/Wellesley, and coming up with nothing by walking around. If anyone's got some leads, it'd be awesome.

Because as much as we like him, we didn't expect a roomate, and we need to find him his own little place.

Coming from BC and NS as we are, it just seemed to me they ask a heck of a lot of financial info, bank records, credit history, co signers, some of these places. We didn't have half the questions he's been getting. How much financial info are they entitled to?

Glasses Help! [13 Nov 2009|04:06pm]

toronto

[maliciouswraith]
[ mood | confused ]

I would like to buy a new pair of glasses. My original pair is perfectly intact, but I would like a spare pair.

I found this one place called Great Glasses. They offer free eye exams and 3 for 1 glasses.

This seems a little too good to be true.

Anyone been to this place and can verify that it's legit?

Also, anyone have any recommendations of places to get your eyes tested and/or to buy glasses? I am hunting around but am not sure what's good or not. (It's been a while since I bought these glasses.)

TIA

Korean summer classes [13 Nov 2009|09:16am]

toronto

[orangeinsanity]
Hello Toronto! I've got a question for you!
Does anyone know of any Korean language classes in the city, specially in the summer? I've searched google and haven't come up with anything. I'm not looking to take anything from a college/university just something I can take outside of my regular classes. I should mention a class for (young) adults.

Who knew it would be so difficult to find Korean classes, I took Japanese classes a little while ago and it seems like we're over flowing with places to learn that (BTW I reccommend TJLS if you're interested).

Thank you and Happy Friday!

hairy typography [13 Nov 2009|08:45am]

i am still alive!

school has been getting so brutal, challenging and demanding, ouch!

i keep having this cliché imagery of myself standing in front of a giant muscled man named "School". he is trying to shatter me into pieces, and i keep getting punched in the face, but i still fight back and try to learn from his punching patterns... ok that's such a weak metaphore à la Rocky. :P all i want to say is that i find it extremely challenging, yet very rewarding and enriching.

i had a great time in school yesterday! the assignment was that we needed to recreate the whole alphabet with objects of our choice. some of the things that my fellow classmates used were pasta, nails, beer caps, jewelry, candy, spices, chewed bubble gum, electrical wires and tiny origami animal figures (love love love love love this idea!). i am a bit cursing myself at the moment because i didn't think of taking pictures of their projects. i think it would have been very interesting to share them.

i teamed up with Hubert and our object was my hair, ta li da da. i got my haircut last week by
[info]pearlly, i kept what was cut. of course, in my usual need to be of bad taste, i kept telling my classmates that it was pubic hair. :D

it was good teamwork between Hubert and us, at the execution of the project, but i am the one who had the idea initially, who did all of the preparation and who thought out in advance what the letters were going to look like. i'm quite happy with the results.

WTF: Fiber Optic Lamp [13 Nov 2009|12:33am]

[ music | Drive - Incubus ]

Hey kids-

I was hoping you could REALLY help a gal out. I am trying to find a fiber optic lamp which displays multiple colors (not just one color). I used to have a spaceship style lamp (which kicked major ass) and would love to have one to spice up my room.

While I'm at it, where can I buy a wooden box of assorted tea bags? I want to ask my boyfriend for one for Christmas, but he has no clue where to start looking (and Teaopia and Starbucks do not carry any from my limited research).

TIA!

Edited for nonsensical use of international grammar structures.

Away again [12 Nov 2009|09:55pm]

To Montreal first thing tomorrow, with The Cloyce and Lorenzo. We’re going by train. The dogs are in kennels already; they love it there. I return Sunday, by-passing Nanookville completely and going direct to Toronto, where I’m at a research conference until Tuesday. I’ll be giving a presentation on the evaluation of the stigma campaign. Meirion and the others are staying in Montreal one day longer than I am, so they’ll be returning Monday.

We’re lucky. The Montreal trip was a prize that Meirion won for collecting the most money for our Local AIDS Walk in September. VIA Rail donated first class return train tickets and the two night’s hotel stay.

So I likely won’t be back on here until Wednesday. In the meantime, you'll behave, won't you?

[duhbigman]
Book lovers! Comedy lovers!

Join us on November 15th, 7:30 p.m. at The Central (603 Markham Street) as Burning Effigy Press launches two new titles:

Temporary Monsters, horror novella by Ian Rogers
Felix Renn is a private investigator in a supernatural world, an alternate reality where a dark dimension called The Black Lands co-exists alongside our own. Travelling to and from The Black Lands is dangerous -- and illegal -- but that doesn't stop some of the creatures that reside there from crossing over into our world from time to time. After a man goes berserk in a posh Toronto restaurant, Felix suddenly finds himself torn between both worlds as he is drawn into a deadly game of movies, murder, and monsters.

Operation Dickhead, sci-fi-comedy novella by Mike Bryant
Mark Allread is angry. He is angry because he works in the tech support department of a major Internet provider. But not angry enough to do anything other than complain to his long-suffering girlfriend. That all changes when the President of the World passes a new law requiring anybody he dislikes to have their heads replaced with genitalia. Mark, in response, decides to build an army of the surgically altered in hopes of overthrowing the President and returning people's heads to their original, non-penisized state. They're here. They're Dickheads. Get used to it.

Additional readings by Liisa Ladouceur (of EYE WEEKLY and MuchMoreMusic's Listed fame), Cynthia Gould, Richard Gavin, Timothy Carter and Dale Percy.

And special guest: Comedian and Fringe star Chris Gibbs!
(The Power of Ignorance, Antoine Feval)

Hullo everyone!

I've come to inquire about jobs - not for myself but for a pretty great friend of mine! I'm helping him search around for a job in online marketing or something along the lines of an online coordinator, etc. but I'm not all that familiar with that sort of thing! Does anyone know of any locations, etc. that might look for someone like that? Or do you work somewhere they might need someone like that? I'm just trying to give him some sort of rope to follow. He's been diligently checking every Toronto job site out there everyday and approaching places with his CV.. Just thought I'd see what people here had to say :)

Thanks!

Blah blah blah. Point form this! [12 Nov 2009|11:06am]

oneinodd
- Dana and I have made amends which is super awesome.  I've missed our car nights, listening to tunes and laughing over nothing and everything.  We've got plans to hang when I'm down at the end of the month. Stoked!

- Friday night @ Lex's started off interesting..

I arrive and Lex/Andrew are outside having a smoke.  I'm not even there for two minutes when some random dude comes running down the street yelling help and rambling about some guy stealing his car.  So, we call 911 and buddy describes the scene: He apparently dropped his keys and some random dude picked them up.  Dude starting yelling "get the fuck out of here!" and then took off in his car.  So, we get off the phone with 911 after a call back to confirm the address and buddy is like, "Wait, I have my keys!" and I'm not sure if this was before or after he randomly knocked on some guys door and then just walked away.. causing the man to come outside (whilst Lex is attempting to tactfully ask this guy if he's on drugs) and ask if someone had just knocked on his door.  Random right?

Cops drive up and buddy runs up to the car, gets in and they drive off.  lex, Andrew and I proceed on to the hanging out part of our evening. The end.

- Cam and I have tickets to an evening that is to be hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos and shall include none other than Stephen King and David Cronenberg. STOKED!
- We ended up scoring free Leafs tickets courtesy of Kim on Tuesday evening.  They lost (awesome) and I got to sit beside a really cool kid.
- Tonight is the 101 Exhibit at miss Ana Belic's studio.  Free wine and photography.. pretty sure it doesn't get any better than that.
- Lex's birthday @ Clintons Saturday night!  I've never been there! Must pre-drink because of dancing! Ha.

Hello, everyone. I'm really excited to be posting my VERY FIRST AFTER PICTURES! My home is 1950 cypress built. When I got the house, pretty much everything was pink (including the molding). What started out as a little project became a pain in the neck for me and my dad and a gut job.

In the end, I wanted something relaxing that would not overwhelm such a small space. I added a touch of royalty for my little girl, and voila.

TTC Riders Strike - this Friday the 13th [11 Nov 2009|03:22pm]

There's a Facebook page too, apparently with carpooling possibilities on it, if anyone decides they want to take a stand and find "a better way" to get to work this Friday.  Even if fares aren't increased, I think there are still many reasons for doing this.
